The Red Ring of Death...

Tragedy struck on the eve of 20DEC07. I got the RED RING OF DEATH! My 360 said, "unh unh no more abuse!" The worst part was that I found out my warranty expired in July! AHH! The good news is this is THE problem that Microsoft has had to deal with since launch. SO, I don't have to pay for repairs! YAY MICROSOFT! Good looking out for the little guy! I had just turn OFF my 360. I have not heard of that one yet. I was in the middle of playing "The Darkness, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Assassin's Creed and Shadowrun." So no game reviews coming out of here any time soon. Not that I write all that often or that anyone really even knows my blog exists.... I do it for me people! FOR ME!

I have been doing some writing for The Zombie Survival and Defense Wiki. You guys should really check it out. My profile there is Springatron. There are a lot of people there that have their facts straight on the survival and defense issues. There is at least ten times as many that don't though...

Gift Pack

Today's Topic#1: Christmas
Subtopic(s): Money, Children & HATE

So it's that time of year folks. Yule Tide spirit and all that jazz. I am so sick of this "Get in to the holiday," attitude bullshit! You ever notice when you were a child that Christmas was the coolest time of the year? It was for me. You know why it was awesome? One word. PRESENTS. You know what that means. I was a greedy little shit. That's right. GREED. The number one driving force behind the whole "gift" horse shit. According to tradition we give gifts to one another because the Three Kings gave gifts to Jesus. It was/is his birthday after all. I think that we (as Americans) have lost perspective of what Christmas should mean. It won't be the same for many, but it also shouldn't be in the "Buy," mentality. I'm pissed. I hate myself and everyone else for embittering Christmas for me.

Today's Topic#2: Coffee
Subtopic(s): Starbucks

Now, I know I just griped my ass off about evil consumerism but, I am going to promote the java giant, Starbucks. I have to say that as a communications guru I NEED that caffeine more than most. Also I am ever so slightly an addict. The winter season is upon us and I happen to spend 98% of my work day outside, coffee is my antifreeze. So when purchasing grounds to brew my life blood I turn to Starbucks for the tastiest and boldest caffeine injection.

Today's Topic#3: Gun of the Day!
Subtopic(s): Springfield XD

Funny thing about the XD is that it is made in Croatia. Most people don't realize that it is just imported by Springfield. It has been in use by the Croatian Army since 1999. It now is widely excepted and even issued in US police departments.

Decent pistol, fun shoot, light and maneuverable. Feels the recoil a little to easily. Comes in three of the most common calibres, .45ACP, .40s&W and 9mm Parabellum. My favorite part is that it is a reliable .45ACP that has a carry capacity of thirteen rounds.

Well that's all for today folks.

Zombies in Plain English

Always on the look out for some good zombie shit.

EPIC 2015

I caught this vid as a post from one of my good pals in Germany. Totaly creepy. I had to share it though. This much is true, we are moving past the stage of a "Wired World," where every single person is "Plugged in," to the "Wireless World," where everyone is "Unplugged." The modern Westernized person wants instant gratification and constant attention. Just a glimpse of the "What might be..."

The Amazing Disgrace...

Today's Topic #1: Slightly off.

Sub Topic(s): None, so to speak of.

I haven't writen since I was in Korea. Almost four months down the road, here I am. I think it is sad that I have only posted three times prior to this. Yet, I still say "Here I am," like this is my security blanket or my refuge... SAD. Anywho.

So Today's title, "The Amazing Disgrace..." I feel like ranting on a subject that has annoyed the ever-lasting shit out of me since I can remember. Reality TV and the Americans sucked in by it. Just now I was watching television with my wife (CSI, if you must know) and we switched the channel when it was time to watch "her show." To what did we apply our attention? The Amazing Race... I hate myself even more for actually sticking around to hate it. The premiss of the show is fantastic. Multiple teams race across the globe to compete in puzzles and challenges. Of course it is all for money. But the problem is that we feel that there is not enough excitement in the race or the challenges themselves. The remedy is to pick the most socially diverse teams and exploit the personal lives of said teams. Like I care who's doing who, and what their mother thinks... Honestly people! All that serves to do is waste time and require less effort from the studio.

Now, the part that scares me the most about Reality TV is that people LOVE it! I understand THAT less than the studios producing this crap! I don't really care what the bubbley blonde with big jugs is thinking because every time she says some thing it is as fake as her chest! To think that the studios screen these people and curtail the cast to US! Everyone who watches should be ashamed. I am.

Falling Out with a Zombie contingency

Today's Topic #1: Fallout
Sub Topic(s): Fallout, Fallout 2 & Fallout 3
Where to start on Fallout… I guess the beginning right?
Fallout one and two have been heralded as one of gaming’s biggest cult classic RPGs.
The entire series is set in the 22nd century following a nuclear war with China. It is a “What if?” scenario highly influenced by the 1950’s and the Cold War era. A major plot point in the games aside from the war is the Vaults. Just before the war the US Government contracted Vault-Tec to build many large underground bunkers to supposedly to preserve US citizens until it was safe once again. It is later learned in the game that the vaults were a large scale social experiment. Each vault had its own unique situation and problems. Yet outside the vaults life still went on.

In Fallout you take on the role of the Vault Dweller sent from the infamous Vault 13 (subsequently the control group of all the vaults) to find a replacement chip for the failing water purification system. Along the way you run into raiders, man eating rats, giant scorpions, struggling civilization and super mutants. You also meet the Brotherhood of Steel. They are a paramilitary organization hell bent on reclaiming pre-war technology. Knights of the Brotherhood are seen in combat armor with assault weapons and the elevated Paladins wear powered armor and carry mini-guns! YES! I need to point out that when the games was released in ’96 that it was considered extremely violent and graphic, by today’s standards the series are still very violent but not quite so graphic. Before I digress too far, the Brotherhood ropes you in to do some scouting for them and you find a super mutant army forming in the north. You report back to the vault and they tell you to help the Brotherhood. You can guess the rest.

In Fallout 2, 80 years down the road, your character is the descendent of the Vault Dweller. This time around you must leave your village to find the Holy GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) to breathe life back into the dying earth of your village. Once again you will encounter raiders, scorps, rats, mutants, still struggling but more vibrant civilization, the Brotherhood and the Enclave. The Enclave will be the primary antagonist of this story line. The Enclave is the remainder of the US Government hold up in an off shore oil rig. After you get the GECK and return to your village you find that they have all been kidnapped by the Enclave for testing. Again I don’t feel like writing too much more about this.

After the release of an okay Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel and the tepid at best console title Brotherhood of Steel, but before their financial fiasco, Interplay was working on Fallout 3. It was code named Van Buren. Sadly in ’03 it was cancelled when Interplay cut its PC division out. Now in a triumphant revival Bethesda Softworks has put up a teaser page counting down to 05JUN07. So far all the page does is play music and has a hand full of concept pieces. The game seems to be an enigma, all that is known is that Liam Neeson is to do the voice work for the character’s father; the game is supposedly a MMORPG and it is being built on the Gamebryo engine previously seen in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Today’s Topic #2: Jameson Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey
Sub Topic(s): Whiskey
I would like a Jameson and coke… PLEASE?! Ha ha. No I really would though… Jameson is a two stage drunk for me. First six to eight shots worth is the Chill Stage. Every time I start I just want to relax and watch the world go by. The next stage is the Happy Stage. It comes around shot eight to ten. Energy levels seem to pick up a bit and the objective changes from chillaxing to conversating. Jameson has a wild side effect; there is a 50% chance that you will become the night’s philosopher. So be prepared for long blown epiphanies about the stars, freckles and sand. It is a wholly satisfying drunk.

Today’s Topic #3: Zombie Survival Kit
Sub Topic(s): …..ah…. Zombies?.....
So I saw this on the net the other day and thought I would share. Unless that thing has a .45 and 500 rounds of ammo you might be better off with a brick. Remember to go for the head. Heh heh. Zombies are one of my favorite genres. They really put humanity into contrast, makes you look at what it is to be human. Not to mention man seems to have a fascination with the dead. What is more embodying of our fascination than it getting back up and carrying out life’s most basic functions? It flies in the face of most monotheistic religions and makes people question. Could you imagine what a zombie apocalypse would be like? Do you have the intestinal fortitude to carry on and do what you have to, to survive?

Today’s Topic #4: Gun of the Day
Sub Topic(s): The Flamethrower
This devastating incendiary death dealer has not been used by the US military since Vietnam. In WWI and WWII all sides used flamethrowers in various roles. I will only cover the man-portable flamethrower here, although it should be stated that vehicle mounted flamethrowers generally were the most wisely deployed. I also want to dispel the myth that flamethrowers actually shoot fire, rather they shoot ignited napalm of one type or the other. Also cinema makes the flame thrower seem as though it only can fire for 50ft or so, where as real flamethrowers can send a jet of napalm up to 250ft. I also want to dismiss the notion that all flamethrowers exploded when shot. Most flamethrowers used unflammable gas as their propellents. While the diesel based napalm needed an incendiary round to make it light by anything other than the weapon.

Flamethrowers were hard to use and generally demanded an entire fire team to be structured around the one weapon. When able to be used the flamethrower was devastating. It excelled at clearing entrenchments, bunkers and pillboxes. It also worked very well on standing buildings and foliage, normally starting fires that would take the entire structure or sections of the forests. They we also used as a psychological wweapons. The gruesome death involved with the receiving end of the flame thrower more often than not caused screams that caused chaos and fear. Fear is a soldier killer. Flamethrowers were so fear by both Axis and Allied powers that when flamethrower troops were captured they were generally not taken, but rather executed on the spot. The Nazis, in all their Fascist wisdom, had their flame troopers sew black and white skull patched on their uniforms.

Flamethrowers generally consisted of two tanks a hose and a gun/sprayer/igniter. One of the tanks would have the flammable liquids in it, in the US’s case; napalm. The tank would contain a propellant; in most cases it wouldn’t be flammable. The hose would connect the tanks to the weapon portion of the flamethrower. Now the weaponized end generally had two pistol grips a trigger on each one being the igniter and the other the fuel release valve. There were various igniter types’ magnesium, heat electricity and pressure. The US flamethrowers had adjustable nozzles with the ability to modify the streams.

Here is a link to see a working flamethrower diagram. It is of a design not used by the USA. http://science.howstuffworks.com/flamethrower3.htm

Good night and good fight.

Bad beer, great game and a sweet rifle. Everything a man needs.

Topic 1: Rainbow Six: Las Vegas
Sub Topic(s): Game Play, Graphics and Game Options.
Rainbow Six Las Vegas is by no means a “new” title, now months old. It is however fairly next gen in its graphics and game play. It is built on the Unreal 3 engine. It is very beautiful and smooth. It is the most realistic shooter I have ever seen. It has lush and populated environments, rarely seen. Each location is very unique and has the ever so sought after “lived in” feel.

Rainbow’s campaign takes you through the Mexico’s streets, a train yard and mine, Las Vegas’ streets, casinos, a dam, and research facility as you search for rebel/terrorist leader. Along the ways you blow various things up, defuse bombs and rescue various hostages all paramount in the Clancy anti-terrorist world. The story basically gives you a reason to shoot, move and take cover. Cover is also very innovative in this game. It is one of the very few where you actually “hug” your cover, hide from view then lean, stand or peak and shoot. It is also one of the very few that allow every thing in the environment to be cover. Be it walls, cars or slot machines. If it will stop a bullet you can use it.

The real gem in this game is the online multiplayer. It starts with the generation of your character. Rainbow has its Persistent Elite Creation system, where you can pick for a dozen or so pre-rendered faces or import your own and add all kinds of war paint, camouflage and battle scars. Next you can add a three letter prefix to your gamer tag, some like it to be their clan initials, name initials, something else all together or as those of us in the military sometimes do, assign it the acronym that is our current game rank (i.e. PFC is Private First Class, SSG is Staff Sergeant or 1LT is First Lieutenant). After general creation comes the outfitting of said character. At this time you will find there are numerous locked items ranging from weapons to armor and clothing to camouflage patterns. Each locked item is unlocked by gaining rank. Rank is increased by accumulation of points. Points are earned by completing online games. Game type, length, difficulty, team balance, success and failure all dictate how many points you earn each game. This gives gamers goals to work for and thus longevity to game life. There are many game types to choose from, but there are two major categories to choose from, coop and adversarial. Coop has a story mode where you run through the campaign missions minus the cut scene cinematic. Adversarial has sharpshooter and team sharpshooter, classic death match type game, survival and team survival, last man standing. There are also goal oriented competitive games. They are attack and defend where one team guards “the package” from retrieval. Another is VIP escort, one team protects the VIP and the other try’s to assassinate them. The last two embody the rush to the middle type game where one is retrieval and the other a territory type.

There are a few minor issues with the game. The weapons are wholly satisfying, where each has their own strengths and weakness in relation to each other and them selves. It is outstanding that the majority of the weapons exist on a balanced plane. There are a few “power weapons” that are available to everyone in campaign mode but only to those further up the ranks can have in multiplayer. Now here is the mistake that Joe or Jane Gamer may never have noticed or realized. The issue is that each weapon is described by three statistics; damage, range and accuracy. Now being a self proclaimed weapons nut I know that there is many an ill described weapon in this. Weapons that are of large and powerful caliber being out done in potency by lesser chambered weapons. There is a good number of weapons that their only difference should be aesthetics, cycle rate and dependability (if it was a factor in this game). That brings upon the next real world consistency issue. All but two of the weapons that have selectable cycle rates have only two, single shot and full auto. All most every rifle and sub machine gun featured in this game has an additional fire option of burst (be it two or three rounds). There are also a couple large caliber assault rifles that carry too many rounds and an automatic pistol that doesn’t carry enough. Again these are things that the average gamer may never know. I also feel that there was a place in this game for the M4A1 Carbine and the M249 SAW. I classify these as minor issues because they do not detract from the game play, consistency of the game or the over all fun.

Topic 2: OB Blue
Sub Topic: Beer

OB Blue is a poor man’s cheap beer only qualified to be a sustainment beer.

OB Blue is unique to South Korea. This GI has only seen them in 1.8 liter bottles, nothing smaller. If had ever drank horse urine, I might relate OB Blue to it.

Topic 3: Gun of the Day!
Sub Topic(s): SCAR Heavy

The Scar-H is a product of US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) soliciting for a more suitable weapon. FN USA picked the contract up after submitting the SCAR series weapons. The SCAR-H is an ingenuitive rifle that was designed from scratch, not around an existing weapon type. The rifle is gas operated with short stroke piston action with rotating locking bolt. This makes it less sensitive to adverse conditions and grime. It is also very easy to disassemble and maintain. Minimal tools are required. One unique feature is it’s ability to be completely ambidextrous. The SCAR’s safety and fire selector are so at all times and the charging handle/ejection port is installable on either side of the weapon. As seen in the picture above the SCAR has a full length Picatinny rail to support numerous attachable optics and sighting systems. The SCAR also has fully adjustable collapsing iron sites for redundancy in a pinch. It has a fully adjust able folding butt stock with an adjustable cheek pad for maximum shooter performance. The SCAR-H’s standard caliber is the 7.62mm NATO round as this is the medium caliber round adopted by NATO; it also accepts the provisioned 20 round box magazine. FN also saw fit to manufacture barrels compatible with the Russian 7.62x39mm M43 round; which the weapon can accept AK47 magazines for. At the time of this writing it is also supposed that the next new chambering will be in the 6.8x43mm Remington SPC (special purpose cartridge). The M16 style magazines that house the 6.8mm SPC are already accepted by the SCAR Light and this will give a capacity of 28 rounds. The SCAR series has no provisions for a fire mode other than single shot and auto fire.

The above photograph shows the CQC (close quarters combat) variant of the SCAR-H. This makes a very potent and powerful battle rifle in a compact platform. The SCAR-H CQC effectively brings power to the urban fight.

That's all folks.
